Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I apply?

Applications are now closed for 2023. We’ll announce the next grant cycle in 2024!

  • Do I have to be Black to apply?

Yes. This grant is for US-based, Black-identifying applicants who are 18 or older and who work, or aspire to work, within the immersive industry.

  • How do I know if my work is immersive?

For purposes of this grant, we will consider projects “immersive” if they aim to incorporate the audience into the story or world of the piece. This can include (but is not limited to): interactive theater, escape rooms, live action role playing, augmented reality, virtual reality, alternate reality games, interactive art installations, and other forms of live, immersive experiences. Still not sure if your idea fits? See our detailed breakdown of what we consider immersive.

  • What if I’ve never made immersive work before?

That’s ok! This grant is open to artists who create primarily immersive experiences, as well as those who are new to the immersive industry who are interested in pushing the boundaries of their existing practice. But if you are looking to create something outside of your experience or skill set, your plan and budget should include assistance from people who can help you bring your project to life.

  • How much of the $10,000 goes to the grant recipient?

All of the funds go directly to you.

  • Does the grant include other forms of support?

In addition to the cash award, grantees also receive support in the form of mentoring, administrative support, PR, and other resources via the grant’s board and its network.

  • How much does it cost to apply?

We do not charge an application fee. The only cost is your time in completing the application.

  • What if I have already started raising funds for my project?

Projects may already be partially funded, and this grant may be used as completion funding.

  • Do I have to use all of the money on production, or can it be used for other expenses?

This funding may be used either directly toward the creation of the immersive work(s) or indirectly by offsetting unrelated costs of the creator that would impair the freedom and comfort of practicing their creativity and art.

  • Can I donate to the grant?

Yes, please! If you are interested in supporting the grant through a tax-deductible monetary donation, you can do so easily from our donation page. Or if you are interested in contributing an in-kind service, please contact BICGrantInfo@gmail.com.
